Outstanding Austrian sculptor. Born in Wels (Upper Austria) on 25 May 1844. He died in Vienna on 17 October 1918. From 1858 to 1868 he studied in Linz, and from 1870 to 1876 at Franz Melnitzky at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Known as the sculptor of monumental groups and portrait statues. His works are in museums in Vienna, Graz, Linz, Budapest and Brno and in private collections. Father of the outstanding painter, graphics and engraver Karl Sterrer jun. (1885-1972).
